Book Festival 101

What to Expect at a Book Festival

Okay, fair enough, we’re not all devotees of C-SPAN’s Book TV. So for those of you who love books and kinds of things books tend to be about, here’s a quick primer on what Pages & Places offers every first Saturday in October.

The Panel Discussions

2010 panel discussion on the history and future of the Women's Movement

At the core of the Pages & Places Book Festival is its five panel discussions. Each is organized around a topic, theme or question. In each case, Pages & Places seeks out some of the most interesting and vigorous participants in those conversations. You can choose the panel conversations you’re most interested in, buy your tickets for the panel—or an All-Day Pass—and come hear some of the country’s great minds discuss this year’s topics.

Each venue is intimate, affording you terrific opportunities to engage with the panelists. But remember, that means seating is limited, so get your tickets now.

The Book Expo

2010 P&P Book Expo: Attendees listen to live readings and explore the C-SPAN interactive bus

The Pages & Places Book Expo runs from 10:00am to 5:00pm on Courthouse Square while the panel discussions are taking place. The Book Expo is free and open to the public and features some things you won’t want to miss . . .

The Expo brings publishers of all shapes and sizes—from our great commercial publishers like Norton and HarperCollins to the vast range of niche’ enterprises that is the current American renaissance in independent publishing. Each sells new and popular titles from their presses.

And while you’re browsing books, take a moment to listen to the public readings—hosted by the Lackawanna County Library System. Local and regional writers, punctuated by special guest readers, will share their work with you.

Another feature of the Pages & Places Book Expo is our day-long series of writing and industry workshops. Published authors, industry experts, and other accomplished writers offer 45-minute craft sessions, where festival-goers interested in pursuing their own literary endeavors can learn and discuss what it takes to write and publish their work.
